The biggest misconception around strategy.

When you think of a good strategy, what comes to mind?

For me: The actions taken to achieve a desired outcome.

That was until I read a book that changed my life.

Good Strategy Bad Strategy by Richard Rumelt was that book.

It opened my eyes to the glaring truth of good strategies:

A good strategy is more about the actions you don’t take than the actions you do.

Great strategies begin with what they aren’t going to do to help them achieve their desired outcome.

If you believe strategy is a list of actions and tactics, I’d highly recommend Richard’s book.

Because, as I’ve learned in my short trip around the sun, strategy is everywhere.

  • Financial strategy.
  • Marketing strategy.
  • Business strategy.
  • Relationship strategy.

If you don’t have a solid conceptual framework of what a strategy is, good luck creating a successful one that achieves your desired outcomes.

What does strategy mean to you?
