Managing Ideas

Many people are creative and have ideas for new products, businesses, or things to create. This is a good thing for some because it never leaves them without something to do.

Yet in practice these distractions can be more harmful than helpful when trying to focus on what really needs attention.

I am currently building out Triovia, and I am a father of two. It’s important that I stay focused so that these other responsibilities get the attention they deserve.

When it comes to business, I only allow myself to focus on a single idea at a time. The problem is, I have so many ideas that my mind can’t help but wander and get distracted by other new ideas that come up.

It’s hard to know when inspiration strikes with me, but when it does I stop what I am doing and harness the creative energy. This means I put down other projects that might be more pressing and spending 15–20 minutes writing or sketching out the idea.

Notepads or procreate helps me make quick sketches as well as jotting down feature lists and brainstorming names. As ideas pop up I get them on paper so I don’t forget anything!

The best way to remember something is not to worry about remembering it.

You know when you are trying hard not to forget something it becomes the only thing you think about? That’s why it is so important to put this idea on paper. You no longer have to concentrate on not forgetting.

Once the allotted brainstorming time is up I close my notebook or put the iPad to the side and forget about it. From there I can resume my previous task with a renewed focus.

As a perfect example, look no further than this blog post. It’s ironic that I was distracted from the video at hand by the ideas above.

So, after taking a short break to write this blog post, now I can finally get back to Final Cut Pro.
