Portico Darwin: Daryl and Daryl

TODAY'S RAMBLINGS

We all can use a break.  A break from my nearly constant political drum banging here.  A break from the bottomless font of shitty news (Supreme Court:  more guns are what we need!  Matt Gaetz:  a lifetime pardon is what I need!).   So a content-free blog post is clearly in order.

And it's a short post, so there's that, too.   Here goes.

I am asking you to ponder and then tell me:  aren't the two Daryl Hannah characters in 1984's Diamond Certified "The Pope of Greenwich Village" and in 1987's Killer time capsule "Wall Street" basically the same?

In order to refresh your memory of the films:

In fact, even the movies themselves are quite similar:  a more sophisticated guy takes a less sophisticated guy under his wing, and big downfalls beset each of the less sophisticated guys.  And everyone in both movies are pursuing their dream, but in unseemly and unethical ways.  And both are mostly set in New York City, although also in each, they go out to the country for a pivotal scene.

But I digress.  Here are some stills from each to further jog your memory.

Daryl Hannah's character in "Pope" is called Diane, and she moves in to a cool place with the Mickey Rourke character.  Hannah's character in "Wall Street" is called Darien, and she moves in to a cool place with the Charlie Sheen character.  In both cases, there are fights in the cool place and she storms out.  In both cases, Daryl's character pleads with her beaus to grow up and deal with reality.

Pope of Greenwich Village:

Diane : When are you going to outgrow him, Charlie?

Charlie : Outgrow him?  I dunno Diane, Maybe WASP's outgrow people.  I'm Italian.  We outgrow pants, not people.

Wall Street:

Darien Taylor : When you've had money and lost it, it can be much worse than never having had it at all!

Bud Fox : That is BULLSHIT!

Another odd coincidence:  Mickey Rourke is her boyfriend in "Pope" and named Charlie.  Charlie (Sheen) is her boyfriend in "Wall Street" (and named "Bud" in the movie).

Diane.  Darien.  Hmm.  And, final coincidence:  her acting is horrible in both, yet each movie is so good even Hannah's wooden acting can't ruin them.

See the parallels now?  Am I missing others?  Should I get a day job?

Regardless of that - many/most have seen "Wall Street".  But fewer have seen "The Pope of Greenwich Village".  It is one powerful film, so if you're looking for something to do this weekend, you could do worse than screening Mickey, Eric, and yes, even the lovely but talent-constricted Daryl, in all of their gritty glory.

And oh, those accents!

FROM THE UNWASHED MASSES
There is still hope.

Thank you to any one that is reading this newsletter.

KLUF
I'll be honest, until researching her for this post, I had no idea Daryl Hannah married The King (A.K.A. Neil Young).  Her standing just drastically improved.  In her honor, here is a Killer album from The King, "Greendale" (sadly, in MP3 format).

Weekend Bonus
Did you make it this far?  Good and thanks.  I've recently been scanning a whole bunch of old family 35mm slides.  So I will be dropping in gems like this every once in a while (like I did for Father's Day on Sunday).

Here's one that captures a problem I've clearly had my whole life:  I always want to take it to the next level.  That is me going for the vodka in the freezer, but with my mother encouraging me to wait until happy hour.
