Don't do what feels right now

I saw an ad for a local university/college on a bus stop that read something along the lines of "do what feels right now" when choosing a course to pursue.

In a similar vein, I was also reading a health and wellness book (written by a millennial of course) and it was suggesting that if you're not enjoying your job or your partner right now, there's a good chance they aren't right for you. Maybe you should leave them. Do it for yourself. Do it for you.

In my generation (millennial) and below there seems to be this "what feels right in the moment" attitude rather than a longer time preference. Baby boomers as they get older seem to also be catching onto this mindset.

Deciding on what to study in the moment is probably not going to work out. There's a lot of pressure to make a decision when the individual is likely still figuring out their identity and what they want in life.

If someone is not enjoying their job or their partner is boring them, perhaps they as an individual need to change. Maybe they need to mature and grow in character. Moving to another job or relationship might be great at first, but the grass isn't always greener on the other side, especially if the individual isn't willing to grow and change.

How you feel is not always the correct depiction of what is true.

Of course, there are situations where you need to leave a job if the work environment is toxic or you are experiencing domestic abuse at home. Sometimes making a spur-of-the-moment decision can change your life in positive ways. I'm not against this completely.

The point I'm trying to make is making a decision based on how you feel right now is a lot of the time going to be a wrong decision. Sleep on it. Consider where you as an individual need to change. Try to think ahead and see where the decision fits.

Here's to better decision making!
