Portico Darwin: Now With Longer Life

TODAY'S RAMBLINGS

<2 Minute Read

Happy Monday, and don't worry:  I rectified my shopping deficiency from a year ago by hitting a grand slam at Belstaff on Saturday, in between pops in the Meat Packing District.  Micro Deadhead Silly thought about riding her Hog, but she was pretty buzzed already, so she walked with us to the Killer Lavaux instead.  I do like what she's done with her bike.

But it's not all fondue, Grand Cru Chablis, and Dark Star here.  Indeed, lounging at home later on Saturday evening, I watched the wrap-up episode of Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones.  Apologies if you're already familiar, but this is a recent Netflix series about particular areas of the world where many live to be 100 or older, and it presents some interesting information.

The documentary specifically reviews the common traits and lifestyles observed across all of the regions.  This is important because it's a diverse list of places and locations:

  • Okinawa, Japan
  • Ikaria, Greece
  • Sardinia, Italy
  • Nicoya, Costa Rica
  • Loma Linda, California

Thus, the show points to a fact-based and time-proven way to extend one's life.

And some say this blog is trivial?

Here is the graphic they used throughout the series, and then a list of what's on the image.  But to make this more fun, the list is in the form of a scorecard, with a place for you to assess your performance and observe/scoff at my own.  There's even a guess of how long you and I will live based on our adherence to the 12 traits.

For each, I've rated my performance on a scale of 0 - 8, 8 being the best.  My logic here is a perfect 8 multiplied by the 12 categories would result in an age of 96.  No, not exactly 100, and not scientific, but still fun?  See for yourself.

I of course have some observations about my performance.

Move Naturally
  • I'm giving myself credit for Gardening even though I don't because I feel I compensate with the volume of walking I do

Outlook
  • Few can debate I know how to Unwind
  • Despite being a proud atheist, I do believe in secular humanism and the universe, which is meaningful, pretty spectacular, and also real
  • Definitely an adjustment, but I have a Purpose now:  living a perfect retirement

Eat Wisely
  • I could eat better, but we do pretty well, and certainly don't eat garbage foods
  • Moderation:  I considered giving myself negative numbers here but didn't

Summary

Hmm.  83 - not that great.  I do think there's one particular category where progress is possible.

10 Seconds of Seriousness:  While this post was mostly for laughs, it's hard to argue with the habits explored in the series.  I hope you found this summary and its subject enlightening.

But do I really have to drink less wine?

And here:  I fixed it.

Yes, it's a good thing I know where to find top intellectual property attorneys.

Have a great week.

Do you sense a theme here?

This was yesterday and the Great Dane was just about the size of Silly's Harley.

This features one of their Mt. Rushmore's for me, the song "Fall on Me."

A lyric:  "Feathers hit the ground before the weight can leave the air."

Wow.
