The Quest For An Analog Life

When I was younger, I used to spend a lot more time in nature – weekly hiking and climbing trips, mountain biking, surfing, camping and more. But as I got older and fell more into work, those things just sort of fell by the wayside.

But when COVID-19 was on the rise and the world began to shut down, it forced me to start finding alternative adventures to do with my wife and son (who was 2.5yrs at the time). We used to go to parks, hockey games, and other fun activities, but those were no longer an option.

Since we live against the mountains here in Summerlin South, Nevada and our son was able to carry himself a little better, I decided to start giving ‘mini-hikes’ a try.

This turned out to be one of the best decisions we could have made.

IN MY TECH-FILLED WORLD, I WANT A COUNTER BALANCE

I forgot how much I loved being in nature. In my career, digital marketing and investing in tech, I started to get sucked into the virtual world. I spend the majority of my professional time behind a computer designing new ads, building customer sales funnels, preparing data reports, managing analytics, reading pitch decks, and communicating with my network of friends though Twitter, Slack, Zoom, Signal, and WhereBy (yeah, it’s a lot).

So as I began to use my weekends exploring the Red Rock Mountains with my wife and kiddo, I realized that this is exactly what I needed: a complete contrarian counter balance to my tech-filled life.

Being outdoors, experiencing the world, and being in nature gave me a sense of relief and calmness that I didn’t realize I desperately needed.

But now that I’ve started, I can’t imagine not spending my weekends hiking, and even want to take things a step further.

FEELING CONNECTED AGAIN

I have to be honestly, the counter-balance of having a highly involved tech life, completely switched to an analog nature-filled on has been reinvigorating over these last few months.

Now, I’m beginning to view plans for 2021 with a whole new look. I want to spend free-time in the new year exploring more of Nevada, going on beach and surf camping trips with my wife and son, taking an RV road trip to the Grand Canyon, and showing my son what a beautiful world we actually live in and share with him why we need to protect it.

I know 2020 was a difficult year for all, but the gift of reconnecting with nature and rediscovering my passion for the outdoors is something I’m truly grateful for.

Now, who wants to go exploring with me?

Email me at ajm@hey.com and let’s go explore Nevada (or if you want to talk tech + marketing, still feel free to email. I love that shit too!)
